What is a webapp?

WebApps are applications in which the application logic runs via the cloud or on a server and the data is displayed in the browser of any end device. Thanks to caching, Progressive WebApps (short: PWA) can now also be used offline and are less and less inferior to native apps in terms of usage.

Webapp vs. Native App

Advantages of a Progressive Webapp

Apps found their way into our digital everyday lives primarily via smartphones and tablets. Until recently, users regarded native apps as the 'standard' or 'normal case' of an app. Recently, however, more and more Web apps have been appearing whose technical developments and applications are growing rapidly. More and more well-known brands - e.g. Twitter, Sportschau, YouTube, GoogleMaps, GoogleTranslate, Giropay, DAZN, Eventim (just a small excerpt) - are also providing their services in a Progresive WebApp.

Exclusively for one operating system
Native Apps

Native apps are developed for specific operating systems such as iOS or Android. They can be used on both mobile and desktop operating systems. What they have in common, however, is that they only run on the system for which they were programmed. This exclusivity is already indicated by the English term 'native', which translates to 'at home'.

For the development of native apps and the broadest possible market coverage, this means that a native app must be developed, maintained and maintained for each operating system.

Independent of operating system
WebApps

Independent of operating system
WebApps

In comparison to native apps, Web apps (=Web applications) are called directly via the browser, e.g. Chrome, Safari or Firefox, and are thus independent of the operating system. Rather, they can be operated on any device on which such a browser is installed. Progressive WebApps thus combine many features of native apps with the practical properties of websites.

Although Progressive WebApp development is a relatively recent phenomenon, cross-browser development can already ensure that the basic functions of a Webapp work on any common browser. Exceptions are new WebApp functions, if they are not yet supported by a corresponding browser. Then, however, the PWA behaves simply like a conventional website.

Advantages For operators

WepApps do not have to be developed independently for different operating systems. Together with an efficient and in comparison to native apps often cheaper programming you can save considerable costs in development and maintenance.

With a PWA you get a fast and performance-oriented website in addition to an 'App'. In addition to different apps for Android and Apple devices, you don't have to program a website that is best ranked in Google Search and draws the attention of interested users to your app.

As the operator of a Progressive WebApp, you do not need a paid App Store Membership, e.g. in the Google Play and/or Apple App Store, nor do you have to share your revenue (usually 30%) with the stores. You are also free to list the WebApp in a store at all.

You are independent of iOS or Android updates and therefore do not have to adapt your WebApp at the same time as the operating systems are updated. This also saves you the cost of installing your own updates in the AppStore.

Since PWAs are called up de facto like a web page over a URL, they can also appear in the Google search results and they can advertise them like a normal web page e.g. with AdWords or over Social Media. You don't have to deal with different acquisition costs for Android or iOS users either.

Publishing a mobile application to an App Store is not enough to ensure that users install your app. With a native app, you need to direct traffic to your app within each app store. These additional costs for the application in the App Store are eliminated with a WebApp or can be used more efficiently across products.
